During both World Wars, craftspeople at Moorcroft turned their hands to the war effort. William Moorcroft, above military service age, began to lose his male staff as they marched off to war and instead received growing orders from the War Office. The company made white tableware for the officers’ messes, and one such vase, classified in the Moorcroft Museum as ‘Toothbrush holder- Officers Mark 1,’ inspired Nicola who proceeded to resurrect the shape, over 75 years since it was last used.
Not only has Nicola revived a shape created over a hundred years ago, but she has also used a flower never seen in Moorcroft design before, aptly named, the toothbrush flower. Dendrobium Secundum is a species of flowering orchid and has a toothbrush shaped flowerhead with bright pink petals.
Nicola hones in on the individual petals in order to create dashing flourishes, but chose a dusty-blue toned colour palette instead of bright pink. Art Deco banding, typical of the years from 1910 leading up to World War II, are filled with overlapping scallops reminiscent of William’s designs during the 1930s and 1940s.
